# The OSCE Guide

An end-to-end guide for schools that run OSCEs: planning, station design, examiners, exam day, standard setting, analysis and candidate feedback.

This guide is for the people who make an objective structured clinical examination happen. Assessment leads, exam office staff, station writers, and examiner trainers all find their roles here. So do program directors. It covers the whole cycle, from the first planning meeting to the letter a candidate receives with the result.

Every page is written for an institution, not a student. Where a page cites a number or a rule, it cites the source. Where the evidence is thin or contested, it says so.

## How the guide is organized

The nine sections follow the order in which an OSCE is built. The first section explains what an OSCE is and why it works. The next four cover the work leading up to the exam. They deal with governance and budget, the blueprint and the stations, the examiners and simulated patients, and exam day itself. The three sections after that cover the work after the exam. They set the pass mark, check quality with the data, and tell candidates how they did. The last section holds the templates and checklists you can take away.

Each section opens with a short page. That page explains what the section decides and who owns the decision. The pages inside go deeper, one topic at a time.

## Three ways to use it

Read it front to back if you are starting an OSCE program from scratch. The order matches the order of the work. Each section assumes the ones before it.

Use it as an audit if you already run an OSCE. Open the section that matches the part of your cycle you doubt most. Compare your practice with the recommendations and the sources behind them.

Come for one problem when that's what you have. A pass rate that jumped. An examiner who marks harder than the rest. A station that failed on the day. Each has a page that explains the cause and the fix.
